My First Fight with Makeup

There came a point in which I realised that makeup wasn't the most amazing thing in the world. That's when I discovered particular cosmetic companies tested on animals.

A common topic of discussion within the cosmetic and beauty industry is animal testing. Some companies, such as Lush and The Body Shop, are 100% cruelty-free, while there are other companies who continue to test their products on innocent animals.

I recently read No Bunny Should Suffer For Beauty by Jessica-Jane Clement, which I discovered on The Huffington Post website, where she challenged women to choose to cruelty-free products instead of buying products from companies who do animal testing. She also talks of a ban, which she hopes the European Parliament will hold in place.

As a makeup lover, I have spent time thinking about this in the past and trying my best to make moral decisions about the makeup companies I choose to buy from. Anyone who buys makeup has a choice to make, whether they support animal testing or not.

But for those of you who don’t have a interest in makeup may still find this article interesting as the majority of the piece is talking about animal rights. That is the main focus of the article as Clement is interested in encourages her readers to not support animal testing.

I found this article informative and interesting because I have never done any sort of heavy research on this topic and after reading this; I have a greater understanding about animal testing in the cosmetic industry. If animal testing and cruelty-free cosmetics is of interest to you, I highly recommend you reading this article.

Articles such as this one could make some big changes to the cosmetic industry, and in my opinion, those changes would be for the better.

Why I Fell In Love..

Girls and makeup, the bond between them can be so strong. Most use some just as a part of getting ready for their day in the morning. For others it's addiction. I'm definitely the latter.

Why do I love makeup?

1. Good skin is beautiful skin. I mean, what's the point in piling on all the makeup without a good skin routine? I have discovered skin products which leave your face feeling… amazing! Plus, the combination of good skincare products and good makeup products can leave you feeling flawless, while taking good care of your skin.

2. If you love art, you're bound to love makeup. Each day you apply your makeup, it's like creating a beautiful piece of work that you get to wear for the whole day. Instead of painting on a canvas, you’re painting on your face.

3. Makeup is versatile. If you have the basics, it allows you to create a number of different looks or find one look and stick to it forever.

4. $$$. For me, makeup isn't just an interest; I hope to use it in my future career. I can't think of anything better than writing about makeup as a job!

5. Makeup can be used as a form of self-expression. Similar to expressing yourself through the outfits you wear and your own personal style. You can express yourself with the makeup applied on your face.

6. Lots of beauty products smell good. C'mon, there's just something about a lip-gloss that smells fruity - you can't help but love it!

7. It is a fun interest. Personally, I love taking friends shopping to buy makeup, helping them to find the best colour to suit them.

When I Met Makeup..

Some girls collect bags. Others collect shoes. I collect makeup. Although, I have always been feminine, my addiction to makeup is fairly recent. Here is how it began.

I met makeup at a young age. After we were introduced, I slowly began to spend more time with it. As a child, I remember applying eye shadow thickly upon my eyelids as it was only makeup that I owned. I only had one colour and it was purple. I had no experience with makeup at this stage and I have learnt so much about makeup in my 22 years of life.

Through a trial and error process, I experimented with different products. Some of those experiences were great, like finding a new foundation, which gave me a flawless look. Other times resulted in a bad skin reaction. But these experiences, like any experience provide knowledge and sometimes, humour! There was one time as a kid I received a clear, glitter nail polish. For some (odd) reason, I thought the nail polish said hair polish - little did I know that the sticky gel-like fluid was for your nails, not to apply glitter to my hair! As I grew older, I started to use more high-end products and developed more skills in the application of makeup.

During my teenage years, I wore makeup, just like any other teenage girl, but I wasn’t hugely interested in the area. As much as I liked dressing up and applying a bit of makeup on each day, at that point in my life my love was for my ever-expanding wardrobe. I would spend the majority of my earnings on buying new party dresses, blouses and denim shorts. It got to a point when I was spending more money than I was earning. Finally in February this year, I decided to do something that I knew needed to be done, or I would have some serious debt problems. A clothing-shopping ban. So I went without buying clothes for three months, and actually stuck to it (believe it or not)! During this time, my love for makeup grew and grew. Soon enough, we were inseparable. I became interested in trying different products and brands, reading beauty blogs and watching beauty videos on YouTube.

These days, I have a fairly extensive makeup collection, which my bank account isn't too pleased about. But I love makeup. I love the colors. I love the textures. I love the shimmer.
